For professional athletes, balancing a career and a personal life, it’s given that the scales will tip towards one side. While they may meet the expectations on the field, their family commitments often take a backseat. For soccer legend, Alex Morgan, she knows that feeling all too well. Having hung up her boots this season, the USWNT icon is relieved that she can finally spend more ‘family’ time.

In September 2024, Morgan announced her retirement and revealed that she is expecting her second child. Married to Servando Carrasco, the couple welcomed their first child, Charlie back on May 7th, 2020. Unlike her previous break, Morgan won’t be returning to the pitch. In an interview with ‘TODAY’, she delves deep into her career after becoming a mom.

It was really mentally draining,” she says. “Not really getting a full night’s sleep and showing my daughter all around the world while I was having a full-time job while playing for the National Team and for Orlando and just trying to do it all.

After giving birth, Morgan signed with Tottenham Hotspur but chose not to extend her contract beyond 2020. She then returned to Orlando before ultimately ending her career as a San Diego Wave player. “Nothing was all happy and roses all the time,” she says.

Morgan also believes that many professional female athletes don’t open up about their struggles and simply power through them. The former USWNT forward is also thrilled that her daughter wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps.

After all, Alex Morgan is no small name in the world of soccer. From being the youngest player to represent the national team, to winning two World Cups, multiple league titles, and even a continental treble with Lyon, she’s done it all. Now that she’s retired, her contributions to the game are far from over.
