Mexico’s first-ever club founded by members of the LGBTQ+ community, Club Deportivo Muxes, entered Mexico’s Liga TDP in 2020. And has been setting a strong example of acceptance and change ever since. The creation of the team emerged out of a group of friends who were tired of the homophobic behavior they experienced while at their seven-a-side games.

Inspired by the Muxe population from the state of Oaxaca, these friends set out with inspiration to create a team that would directly and proudly stand up to such behavior.
C.D. Muxes revolutionizing soccer in Mexico
In 2020, the team’s men’s side entered the Liga TDP, the fourth division of Mexico’s soccer league. The team’s impact was quickly felt, not just in the league, but in its growing fanbase. They are presently in the Liga TDP quarterfinals, and are looking for promotion to the third division should they win the necessary games.
Unfortunately, they have been met with a few homophobic comments from rival teams, but the Muxes have persisted in the face of potential negativity. In addition to their on-the-field performance, the Club Deportivo Muxes have also been using their platform to discuss social issues.
Openly in support of the LGBTQ+ community, 4th tier side @clubmuxes are seeking to "revolutionize" 🇲🇽 soccer with their efforts on & off the field.
This season, they're also one of the favorites for 3rd division promotion.

Since their inception, they have educated audiences on gay athletes, and take part in tournaments. Moreover, they have also spoken out against discrimination against members of the LGBTQ+ community in Mexico. The National Association of LGBTQ+ Sports in the nation has also commended them for their work. It is evident that their impact is creating a change in soccer.
The Club Deportivo Muxes’ success is revitalizing the Mexican soccer scene, as well as making progress in rights for the LGBTQ+ community. Despite the remaining challenges, the Muxes are providing inspiration for people to stand up for their identities.
