Soccer often unites fans from all walks of life despite the intense rivalry. The passion and enthusiasm propel the teams to greatness. However, this enthusiasm sometimes goes far. And the rush of blood results in mayhem, leading to violence. Tragically, one soccer game recently descended into chaos, costing a young fan his life.
After an enormous outcry, police presented 103 culprits in court and potentially face serious charges. The apprehended fans are reportedly Croatian, who were in the Greek capital city to support Dinamo Zagreb. However, authorities postponed the game. But what charges do the Croatian fans face for their violent conduct?

Violent mayhem marred soccer game
Michalis Katsouris, 29, visited Opap Arena in Athens to support his beloved AEK Athens. The occasion was the UEFA Champions League qualifier between AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb. Katsouris was oblivious to the fact that it would be his last game. The pre-game havoc resulted in rival supporters fatally stabbing him. As per the Associated Press report, “Amateur video of the attack showed dozens of youths wielding bats and iron bars running past the stadium, as flares and petrol bombs exploded. Ten people were injured and four remain hospitalized.”

The media outlet further reports 103 Croatian fans appeared before Athens Court. They face criminal charges, including murder and membership of criminal organizations, for their involvement in the violence. However, it further states that they expect most suspects to have murder charges dropped. The act resulted in the condemnation from Greece and Croatia. Meanwhile, AEK Athens has released a strong statement.

“The question that torments our fans is one that we described from the outset, and that also torments us: How is it possible that following the brutal murder of Michalis by a gang of vicious criminals from Croatia, for AEK Athens to enter the field and play against this team?” AEK said in a statement. “Will any of his killers be in the stands?” The Greek club urges UEFA to take strict action against the Croatian club.

Fans gather to pay tribute
After the police brought everything under control, the Greek fans gathered outside the Opap Arena. They paid tribute to Michalis Katsouris, killed during the chaos. They left flowers and candles at the site. Katsouris hailed from a town near Athens. Greek Public Order Minister said the police made a tragic error in stopping Croatian fans. He further stated police didn’t act proactively despite the information of likely clashes.
Wednesday saw another game between the local side Panathinaikos and French giant Olympique Marseille in Athens. However, the game went on peacefully. Later this week, Athens will host another crucial tie. Manchester City will play Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup.
