Gressel, who plays full-back for Inter Miami had the chance to meet the NFL icon recently. Patrick Mahomes was in attendance at the Arrowhead Stadium as Herons took on Sporting KC. Gressel took the opportunity to pay his compliments regarding Mahomes’ contribution to soccer. The fullback said in the Player Manager podcast, “I just thanked him and his wife for all he does to promote the game of soccer. He didn’t have to invest as a minority owner in Kansas City and do these public appearances as he does sometimes.”

Patrick Mahomes and his wife Britany have ownership stakes in NWSL club Kansas City Current. As such, the duo are often seen promoting Current matches. Notably, the Mahomes couple were spotted at KC Current’s season opener against Portland Thorns. Mahomes interacted with the fans and even promised to bring Taylor Swift along sometime!

Furthermore, these promotions are paying dividends. This season, people are flocking to watch NWSL games as the San Diego Wave shattered the opening-day attendance record. Moreover, just before the season started, the San Diego Wave was sold for $120 million, an NWSL record!

Hence, there is no doubt that Patrick Mahomes played a part in NWSL’s spectacular growth. In fact, even the NWSL commissioner thinks that the Super Bowl winner is helping to transcend the fan experience.

In a recent interview, NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman spoke on Patrick and Britany’s contribution to KC Current. According to Berman, they are not merely celebrities who want to invest, but rather people with an authentic connection. She stated, “Take Patrick Mahomes for example. His wife Brittany was an incredible college soccer player and that makes the investment feel different.”

Berman also added that the Mahomes duo show up at games and are cheering their team on. She explained, “They are loving it. I think that’s why you’re seeing it transcend the fan experience.” Additionally, Patrick Mahomes’ passion for soccer is not limited to KC Current. Previously, he has invested in MLS club Sporting Kansas City as well.
