Following the defeat against Bayern Munich, Manchester United are out of the UCL. Fans are perplexed about how United couldn’t qualify from a seemingly innocuous group with Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen. Manager Erik ten Hag is rightly under criticism for the poor results. Yet it seems the club is not yet willing to part ways with him, with some interesting reasons being laid out.

With 12 goals in 6 matches, United has been one of the best-attacking teams in the tournament. However, an average possession of 47% and 15 goals conceded highlight the problems surrounding Erik ten Hag’s side.

Soccer expert Mark Ogden of the ESPN show believes two reasons are keeping the Dutch manager in the job. Firstly, as per him, “There is nobody upstairs to make a decision.” The Glazers are looking to finalize the sale of a  25% stake to Ineos chairman, Jim Ratcliffe. While Ratcliffe would start as a minority owner, it is believed that he is planning a full takeover in the future. This will considerably alter the club’s power dynamics; hence, the Glazers are probably waiting for the deal to conclude before making a call on Erik ten Hag.

Moreover, as per Ogden, there is no obvious successor. He also highlighted the example of Ralf Ragnick taking over from Solksjaer and how it proved to be a disastrous spell. Furthermore, he implied that the situation would have been different for ten Hag had a manager like Thomas Tuchel been available.

Ogden also brought forward an interesting point regarding United’s finances. The club owes over $300 million in outstanding payments and transfers. Ending Ten Hag’s contract will further increase their debt. Hence, it will be something the upper management will be keeping an eye on.

While Ten Hag might be safe for now, his situation is indeed worrying as per his former compatriot.
