Today’s Everton-Manchester City game took a turn after a referee’s intervention against the home side at Goodison Park. Already being punished by the Premier League earlier with a points deduction, Everton, represented by their coach, Sean Dyche, vented his disappointment during the post-match deeming the call ‘bizarre in his world‘. Contrarily, it was all jubilant for Pep Guardiola, who flaunted his World Champion status.

It’s getting hotter and hotter. PGMOL, led by Howard Webb, is once again under scrutiny after quite a few controversial decisions. It started with Luis Diaz’s offside against Tottenham Hotspur and then kept happening repeatedly. The Everton boss was left in shock after suffering a seemingly unfair call as well.

At halftime, Everton would have gone into the changing room high in confidence. But their hope was thwarted after a close-range shot by Nathan Ake was obstructed by Amadou Onana’s hand, leading to a penalty. Baffled about the decision, Sean Dyche reacted, saying, “That’s completely natural. He’s not even putting his arm up to save it. How that is given as a penalty is bizarre in my world but I must be from a different planet. Tonight, the linesman gives that and he’s 50 yards away.”

The Toffees midfielder was just a foot or two away from Ake, who shot the ball with considerable power. Caught lunging sideways, Onana’s hand was away from the body off-balance, which interfered with the ball’s path. Justifying the action, Sean Dyche felt that it was obviously natural for a player to be held in such a position, and there was no intent of handing the ball.

Consequently, Julian Alvarez then buried the ball in the center of the goal, making it 2-1 for the visitors. It was Bernardo Silva’s final strike in the 86th minute that closed the game out, pushing Everton down to 17th. Initially, Jack Harrison gave Everton the lead in the 29th minute with the opening goal. Subsequently, Phil Foden’s 53rd-minute banger leveled it for City. Pep Guardiola could not hold in his praises for the team after the game.

Pep Guardiola emphasizes on ‘standards’ of Manchester City

The Sky Blues are coming off a victorious campaign at the FIFA Club World Cup. Hence, Pep Guardiola did not hesitate to remind the media that his team was the best after defeating Everton 3-1 in their backyard. Pep said, “That’s why we are world champions, the best team in the world. We have standards to keep!”.

One take at a time

Growing up in a sporting background, I found a passion for soccer through the remarkable 2002 World Cup-winning Brazilian football team. Watching the Premier League where Thierry Henry-starring ‘Invincible’ Gunners and Sir Alex Ferguson’s glorious Manchester United had ruled, I had my heart set on Arsenal. However, Ronaldo Nazario, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho are my favorite players and Lionel Messi is the GOAT.
