Inter Miami and Messi beat Cincinnati in thrilling cup semi-final

Inter Miami won a nail-biting semi-final in the US Open Cup earlier yesterday. Cincinnati went up by two goals courtesy of Luciano Acosta and Brandon Vasquez in the 18th and 53rd minute. However, Miami struck back through Leonardo Campana in the 68th minute after Messi assisted from a set piece for Campana to head into the net.

Miami looked down and out and neared an exit as the game went into injury time post-90 mins. But again, the mercurial Messi provided another assist via a delightful curling ball to Campana, who emphatically headed in deep into stoppage time in the 90+8′ minute.

The game went to extra time and Josef Martinez put Miami in the lead in the 93rd minute of extra time. But Cincinnati hit back through Yaya Kubo in the 113th minute. The match proceeded to penalties with Inter Miami narrowly edging it 5-4. What’s perhaps rather interesting stat is that the Argentine World Cup winner had never won a penalty shootout at club level in his career, but he’s won three on the trot in the US.
