Erling Haaland, who made every goal-scoring record look like a cakewalk last year, now plays second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo. At the age of 38, Ronaldo is this year’s top goal scorer with 54 goals to Haaland’s 50. Other European stalwarts such as Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe also trail behind the Saudi League player. Shortly after claiming the goal-scoring feat, Ronaldo loudly proclaimed that he has got no plans to stop. And, it will now be the duty of Haaland and Mbappe to make sure that they are not overshadowed by a player nearing 40s again.

In an interview after Al Nassr’s 4-1 win, Ronaldo, who scored his 54th goal in the 92nd minute, assured that he will continue with the same vigor next year.

Cristiano Ronaldo told the press that he owes his goal-scoring feat to Al Nassr teammates and supporters. Besides, he laid bare how the Saudi Pro League has raised the stakes. Soon, the veteran spoke about his plans for the new year with Al Nassr. “I want to be the world’s top scorer in 2024,” said Ronaldo. From the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s perspective, this new year’s resolution is not a big surprise. But for the rest of the soccer world, Ronaldo’s longevity and zeal to defy the odds still remains a mystery.

For other talents in Europe, CR7’s unbridled passion is a life lesson and a bane at the same time. While the Portuguese chief continues to inspire, he also dominates soccer’s next superstars, giving them no room to top charts. If Ronaldo dominated the goal-scoring race, his rival Lionel Messi dominated the race for accolades. Therefore, this year will truly go down as the veteran’s year in soccer history.

The veterans are not making room for rising superstars

In October, Lionel Messi won the Ballon d’Or, overtaking Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe. Two months later, these players fell short against Ronaldo. This perhaps is the first time soccer is seeing such domination from players who are close to hanging their boots. When Messi and Ronaldo broke through, there was no Ronaldinho or Ricardo Kaka to outclass them.

Furthermore, the next year is also likely to tell a similar story. Considering that Ronaldo plays in the Saudi League, he is better off than players in Europe’s top leagues, when it comes to goal-scoring. The Saudi League stage is not as competitive as the Premier League stage. The lesser the competition, the more the chances. Meanwhile, Messi’s MLS too is a space where competition is less, compared to Europe. Therefore, if things go well, the Messi-Ronaldo domination seems to have no end in the near future.

From cheering on Real Madrid to channeling an inner analyst with my pals during every other World Cup and kicking the ball timelessly, soccer is now a therapy for me with boundless conversations.
