29 YO PSG Target Tipped to Beat Cristiano Ronaldo as Portugal’s Best Player

For years Cristiano Ronaldo has been the driving force behind Portugal’s success. Das Quinas have made history under their iconic skipper, with the team lifting the Euros in 2016. However, with time, it seems like the player’s importance to the team is hanging by a thread. By all means, Cristiano is still a key player for Roberto Martinez‘s side. However, calling him the most crucial star on the team could be a far-fetched idea!
It’s not just one person’s opinion but the general consensus among fans. Portugal suffered a shock loss at the hands of Slovenia in their last game with Ronaldo on the field. Despite having their captain back in their ranks, the team lacked the attacking edge and failed to make any dent against their opponents. European football expert Andy Brassell has been following the Portuguese national team for a while now, and he believes that it is time for Cristiano Ronaldo to pass the baton.

Talking on TalkSports’s Kick Off, Brassel claimed, “Roberto Martinez does have options. But because there’s so much quality in that Portuguese squad, I think people understand if he takes those options. I think Cristiano Ronaldo realizes now that sometimes he’ll start, and sometimes he’ll be a squad player and that is just what he’s going to have to live with. It’s interesting because to even think about criticizing Ronaldo two or three years ago would have been treated as complete heresy in Portugal. Whereas now, I think people understand that Bernardo Silva is their best player.”
Bernardo Silva has emerged as one of the leading stars for Portugal in recent years. The midfielder has made a name for himself, rising through Manchester City’s ranks as one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted players. His recent performances have seen multiple clubs chase his signatures, with French champions PSG keen on securing his services.

PSG keen on signing Cristiano Ronaldo’s successor at Portugal
Nasser Al-Khelaifi and his side are closely scouting Bernardo Silva’s situation at Manchester City. Just after news broke out that the Portuguese star was looking for a new challenge outside England, PSG was amongst the first clubs to be linked with the midfielder. However, their plan to sign the midfielder this summer might have gone up in smokes. Bernardo Silva penned a contract extension with Manchester City earlier this year. The deal ensures that the midfielder is a part of the club till July 2026.

Significantly, it is a big blow for PSG, as the Parisians hoped to force City to a deal during the player’s final season with the club. However, with Silva penning a contract extension, Manchester City seems in no hurry to sell one of their key players. Unlike the public belief that Bernardo is tired of the success at Manchester City, it suggests the player is enjoying his time at Etihad and still wants to be a part of Pep Guardiola’s project.
