He went as far as suggesting that the players from Argentina were given preferential treatment during their encounter with the Netherlands. As for Weghorst, he offered a contrasting perspective.

In a recent interview, Wout Weghorst explicitly disagreed with his coach’s statements, casting doubt on the alleged bias in the World Cup. The 31-year-old stated, “Van Gaal’s words about the bias towards Argentina? No, frankly, I don’t agree with Van Gaal. I heard what he said but I don’t see it that way.” 

The forward then delved into the specifics of the quarter-final match between the Netherlands and Argentina. He recounted, “We equalized in the tenth minute of stoppage time with a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. If it were the other way around, the referee wouldn’t have given that free kick.”
