“You Have the Power” – Megan Rapinoe Urges Pope Francis To ‘Do Something’ After His Stance on Blessing Same-Sex Couples

Megan Rapinoe has long been using her platform for her activism. The USWNT icon has been a firm advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, pay equity, and standing against discrimination. Recently, she took another step by reaching out to Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church. She urged him to bring about change after he made a big decision regarding same-sex couples.

The Catholic Church has historically held a firm stance against same-sex marriage. This was reiterated in 2021 when the Vatican announced that it could not condone same-sex unions because “God cannot bless sin”. However, on Monday, Pope Francis made a groundbreaking statement, signaling that there might be exceptions to this longstanding view.

Megan Rapinoe wants Pope Francis to use his ‘power’ for change

For the first time in the history of the Catholic Church, the Pope expressed openness to the idea of Catholic priests blessing same-sex unions. However, he emphasized that these blessings should be determined on a case-by-case basis. Also, another caveat is that it will not be equated to heterosexual wedding ceremonies.

In response to Pope Francis’ statement, Megan Rapinoe used her influential platform to share her message with the Pope. In her Instagram story, she wrote, “Oh well how big of you, while we continue to be persecuted brutalized killed etc etc etc etc etc”. Rapinoe’s words highlight the frustration and disappointment felt by many LGBTQ+ individuals.

Rapinoe further urged Pope Francis to take action, stating, “Pope, you have the power to actually do something. DO IT”. Her calls upon him are to use his power to bring about meaningful change and create a more inclusive and accepting environment for the LGBTQ+ community.

Megan Rapinoe’s mother always knew about her being ‘different’

Throughout her life, Megan Rapinoe has consistently shown support for the LGBTQ+ community, and her mother played a significant role in accepting and understanding her. In a 2021 interview, she openly discussed how she approached the subject with her mother. Despite coming from a strict upbringing, the Ol Reign forward was able to find a safe space to express herself, in the form of her mother.

Reflecting on this experience, she acknowledged, “We didn’t have any kind of progressive language around expressing your identity”.  The 38-year-old further added, “But from a young age, my mom really understood me. I think she knew that I was a little bit different”. She has since become actively engaged in promoting positive changes surrounding these matters.
