Arsenal surely haven’t been one of the top teams in the English Premier League for a while now. While last season the team did show some signs of progress under new manager Mikel Arteta, the Londoners still couldn’t finish among the top 6.

The club took some major strides last season. Selling off against veterans in defense like Sokratis and Mustafi, the Gunners brought in younger defensive talents like Gabriel. While the Brazilian excelled as a starting center back, there was no fixed center back pairing alongside him.

Starting alongside David Luiz, Pablo Mari, the team had shifts in their back line and also a frequent change in formation. While the Gunners had the third best defense, conceding only 39 goals, their shaky defense was apparent against the big guns.

Arsenal confirm signing of Ben White from Brighton

Coming into the transfer window, Arsenal knew that they had to bring in a solid center back to their lineup. While they were linked to multiple players, their biggest transfer target was Brighton Hove Albion’s young defender Ben White.

After multiple speculations and transfer rumors, the Londoners have finally confirmed that they have signed the talented 23-year-old defender with a staggering fee of £58 million.

White is certainly one of the most talented young defenders in the Premier league. After anchoring Marcelo Bielsa led Leeds FC defense, White certainly showed that he can excel as a starter in a Premier League team.

With a passing accuracy of 85% and a 62% tackle success rate, White showed all the signs of being a starter for Brighton. Graham Porter certainly saw the talent and gave the opportunity the English defender.

White continued his brilliant form with 83% passing accuracy and still had a successful tackle in 2 attempts. Only missing 2 games, the 23-year-old showed that he isn’t injury prone. His impressive display with Brighton Hove Albion in the 2020-21 season, guaranteed him a place in Gareth Southgate’s English squad for the Euro 2020 tournament.

While he didn’t make an appearance in the Euros, White certainly cemented himself as a top defender. A £58 million fee for White might seem inflated but considering the talent the English defender possess, he might be a mainstay for Arsenal for years to come.
