Messi had bagged seven goals so far in the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign.
But as reported by Daily Post, this goal against Venezuela made him the leading goalscorer in CONMEBOL history in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers (28), along with Uruguay’s Luis Suarez.
Currently, both men are tied at 28 goals. But Lionel Messi can leave his former Barcelona teammate behind if Suarez cannot score against Chile and if Messi scores against Ecuador later this month.
But this won’t be Lionel Messi’s primary objective. After emerging as the winners of the Copa América 2021, Messi’s primary focus will be winning the World Cup for his country later this year.
Argentina has already qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Thus, the coach might also consider giving Messi a rest to give the younger talents a chance to have the experience of playing in a FIFA World Cup Qualifier.
Can Lionel Messi win his first FIFA World Cup in 2022?
The FIFA World Cup is one major trophy that is missing from Messi’s trophy cabinet. In 2014, Argentina came very close to winning the FIFA World Cup for the third time.
But unfortunately, they lost to Germany in the finals. Though they lost, they gave tough competition as the game had the fans at the edge of their seats.
