Inter Miami does it again! After a grueling Leagues Cup run, Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are flying high again as they successfully booked a spot in the US Open Cup final. The Herons defeated FC Cincinnati at their home after triumphing 5-4 on penalties following a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Former USMNT star and legend, Taylor Twellman expressed his delight over the performance of Lionel Messi, and quoted him as “unbelievable,” after Messi assisted twice to keep Inter Miami in the game.

Lionel Messi rescues Inter Miami with a thrilling comeback

FC Cincinnati kicked off stronger in the semifinal showdown at TQL Stadium on Wednesday. With quickly muting Messi up top and defeating Miami’s backline, Cincinnati caused quite some trouble to the Herons. FC Cincinnati’s skipper, Luciano Acosta opened the scoring in the match at the 18th-minute mark. The Miami side continued to fight back for the equalizer but was majorly dominated by the opposition in the first half.

Cincinnati forward & USMNT figure, Brandon Vazquez doubled the lead for the MLS table-toppers a few minutes into the second half. With 2-0 down after an hour of play, the Herons picked up their game and fought for the comeback. Leo Campana led the comeback for Miami by scoring two consecutive goals with assists from none other than, Lionel Messi.

Just when everyone thought Inter Miami was going to lose their first match in the Messi era, it was the magical left boot of the Argentine, that struck again in the 97th minute. Messi lobbed an inch-perfect pass in the box from the free kick and Campana sent the ball inside the net with a thumping header in the final minutes of regulation.

The goal from Campana sent the match straight into extra-time and strengthened the hopes for Inter Miami. Ex-USMNT legend and Apple TV MLS analyst, Tylor Twellman quoted Messi’s assists as ‘Unbelievable’ after his performance. He said that FC Cincinnati should have taken the ball in the corner, which must have prevented Miami’s equalizer.

More drama unfolded in the extra time, as both teams added one more goal to the scoreline. After an enticing performance on the pitch, the game ended with a 3-3 stalemate, forcing into penalties. The Herons goalkeeper Drake Callendar made a great save on Nick Hagglund’s attempt to ultimately win the game for Miami and secure their ticket to the final.

Messi has transformed Inter Miami CF

Prior to the arrival of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, Miami was considered one of the worst teams in the MLS. But, with the addition of Lionel Messi to the squad, the South Florida side has become a force to reckon with. Delivering enticing and gripping performances on the pitch every week with the help of Messi, Inter Miami CF is a blockbuster feature every match.

Lionel Messi has made it eight straight matches with a goal or an assist for the Herons. With his prowess, Messi has taken the Miami side through to their second cup final since his arrival. Although the Argentine’s scoring streak ended against Cincinnati, Messi found another way to find his goal contribution.

Inter Miami remains unbeaten in their last eight matches with Messi heading into his Major League Soccer debut on Saturday when they face New York Red Bulls at the Red Bull Arena. All eyes will be on Lionel Messi once again as the Miami side will be aiming to improve their standing in the MLS table. Currently, they sit at the bottom of the table and they’ll be hoping to book a spot for the championship playoffs with the help of Messi.
