“I’m a Better Athlete Now, Being a Mom”- Inspired by Serena Williams, USWNT’s Crystal Dunn Says Motherhood Helped Her in Improving as an Athlete

Crystal Dunn, the standout player for the US Women’s National Team (USWNT), is following in the footsteps of tennis icon Serena Williams. While Serena is a tennis legend, Crystal has made her mark in soccer. Last year, Dunn surprised fans with her quick return, rejoining the national team less than four months after giving birth. In a recent interview with Just Women’s Sports, the soccer player shared her experience of motherhood as she prepares for the 2023 World Cup.

The USWNT star also expressed how becoming a mom has positively influenced her athletic career, which has, in turn, allowed her to appreciate every moment on and off the field. Interestingly, Crystal herself has been an avid fan of Serena, stating “I actually watched her play before I was even watching women’s soccer.”

Having given birth recently, Dunn shared how becoming a mother changed her perspective. In the interview she said, “I feel like I’m a better athlete now, being a mom, because I have learned to really appreciate every little moment.” She believes motherhood has given her a new perspective, enabling her to cherish every pass, tackle, and opportunity on the field.

The USWNT star’s ability to excel in multiple positions has been a defining characteristic of her career. She said, “Playing multiple positions is something that I think I’ll be remembered for.” Dunn also shared that one of the greatest joys is having her son watch her matches from the stands. She expressed, “Seeing my son in the stands brings me the most happiness. It reminds me that I’m playing for something bigger than just winning games.”
