Former India wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani was all praises for off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. He said that the 31-year old was a role model for today’s youngsters. He said, “I have no words to express the achievements which Ravichandran Ashwin has done. My heartiest congratulations to the would-be legend in the making.”
Kirmani also called Ashwin the pride of Tamil Nadu and India. The 68-year old continued, “He is such a gentleman cricketer, among all the other gentleman cricketers, he excels. I deem it an honour to honour Ashwin.
He also hailed the Tamil Nadu cricketer’s efforts in dedicating himself to the game and in academics too. Ashwin has been a major cog in the Test team and has been fairly lethal. During the 2017 Sri Lanka series, he became the fastest to reach 300 Test wickets. The previous record holder was Australian pace bowling legend Dennis Lillee.
Ashwin made his debut for India in November 2011 and has been India’s main strike bowler in Test cricket for the last three years. He may not be the first choice in limited-overs, but Virat Kohli can depend on him in Test cricket.
After struggling in the seaming friendly pitch during the Kolkata Test, Ashwin was in his element in Nagpur helping India dominate Sri Lanka. He bagged four wickets in the first innings and then tore through the lower order.
After a mediocre 2014 season, Ashwin finished as the top wicket-taker in Test cricket in 2015 and 2016. He snatched 62 wickets in nine Tests in 2015 and another 72 from 12 Tests the following year. So far, the 31-year old has 311 wickets from 57 Test matches to his name. His bowling average is 25.57 with career-best figures of 7/59. He has 26 five-wicket hauls and seven 10-wicket hauls in test matches for the national team.
Ashwin will not feature on the national side again until August when India take on England in a 5-test match series.
