French player Anthony Martial kicked off his career with Les Ulis. It was the same team that produced the likes of Patrice Evra and Thierry Henry.
At the age of 14, he was recruited by Olympique Lyonnais’ academy. Then, in the 2012 UEFA European U-17 Championship, he was called up to the France national team.
In the same year, he made his professional debut for Lyon in a Europa League match. His first Ligue 1 game came against Ajaccio as a substitute.
A year later, he moved to AS Monaco on a 3-year deal for €5 million plus bonuses. He scored his first goal for the principality club on his debut against Rennes. Unfortunately, he was hobbled by a sprained ankle.
In his second season, he helped Monaco grab a 1–1 draw against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain. Then, in 2015, Martial scored his first goal in European competition, a 4–0 home win over BSC Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League.
Then, in 2015, Martial completed a move to Manchester United for £36 million on a four-year contract. It was the highest transfer fee paid for a teenager, breaking the previous record of £27 million United paid for Luke Shaw in 2014. The then manager Louis van Gaal called Martial an acquisition for United’s future. He even called the transfer fee “ridiculous”, alleging that Manchester United had to pay £10 million more than other teams.
Anthony Martial has helped the team to the 2015-16 FA Cup, 2016-17 EFL Cup, the 2016 FA Community Shield and the 2016-17 Europa League championships.
