The American fighter had a troubled childhood. He grew up watching his brother constantly fighting. His father was a drug addict who spent most of his time in prison. Consequently, his parents separated when he was one-year-old. He was then adopted by his mother's now ex-husband.

Cody and his brother got involved in boxing through their uncle. Unfortunately, Cody's mother thought boxing was too dangerous for the latter. Hence, he transitioned to wrestling. Meanwhile, Garbrandt convinced his mother to let him box. He had a successful amateur boxing career with a record of 32-1 record. Cody also placed fifth during his senior year in a national tournament. He received All-American honors for that.

Garbrandt received offers from DI schools, but he opted for a D2 instead. Eventually, he dropped out and began selling weed, worked as a bouncer, and completed coal miner training.

He then committed to MMA and amassed an amateur record of 6-2. Cody made his pro debut on December 29, 2012, a fight in which he knocked out his opponent within one round. As of 2021, he is #3 in the UFC bantamweight rankings.

Cody Garbrandt: UFC Career

After racking up a 5-0 record, Cody made his way into the UFC. He won his first five fights in dominating fashion and earned himself a title shot against one of the greatest bantamweights of all time, Dominick Cruz.

Garbrandt looked untouchable against Cruz. 'No Love' had an answer for every move of Cruz. In fact, he mocked Cruz throughout the fight and knocked him down multiple times. By the end of the fifth round, there was no doubt that Garbrandt was the new champion.

Unfortunately, his reign did not last long. Cody Garbrandt's ex-best friend TJ Dillashaw defeated him in the next bout. One year later, Garbrandt tried to reclaim his belt in a rematch but failed.

After losing twice to Dillashaw, Garbrandt fought Pedro Munhoz. Like his previous two fights, Garbrandt's emotions got the better of him. He was drawn into a firefight, which he lost. At this point, he was on a three-fight skid and was desperate to prove himself in the octagon.

After a year off, Cody Garbrandt returned to the cage at UFC 250 to fight Raphael Assunção. Cody showed a completely different version of himself in the fight. He knocked out Assuncao in the second round with a devastating shot. He holds a record of 7-3 in his UFC career.

Cody Garbrandt: Fighting Style

Speed is Cody Garbrandt's biggest asset. Apart from that, he has arguably the best boxing in the bantamweight division. His head movement and footwork can be a lot of trouble for his opponents.

Garbrandt's wrestling background helps him fend off takedowns. 'No Love' has one of the best takedown defense. As of now, his takedown defense is at 100%, nobody in the UFC has taken him down yet.

Cody Garbrandt: Achievements

Besides being the former UFC champion, Garbrandt was the OHSAA 112 lb DII State Champion and 2016 Breakthrough Fighter of the Year.

He has won the Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night bonuses two times each. He holds a proud record of 12-3-0 in his MMA career.
