College Football Playoffs: Format, Schedule, And More What is the College Football Playoffs? Starting way back in 2014 after replacing the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), the College Football Playoffs or CFP became the hallmark postseason tournament where the best of the best are invited to engage in a knockout tournament to become the national champions for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). What is the new format for college football playoffs? Earlier, only 4 teams were able to reach the CFP. However, starting from the 2024 season, a new format has been implemented where 12 teams were allowed to enter the knockout round for a shot at winning the national championship. This new contract is supposedly going to last till the end of the 2025 season. When the 2026 season starts, a brand new contract will be drawn and sources have noted that the committee will look for further expansions. To understand the team selection process, the first thing to note would be the bids. The Top 5 highest ranked conference champions will receive automatic bids. This gives the Power 5 conference (SEC, BIG TEN, ACC, Big 12, and PAC 12) a chance at cracking the playoffs if they have the required rank. The 7 highest-ranked teams who do not fall beside the conference champions will receive at-large bids. This will act as a boost for the teams who had managed to have an amazing season but unfortunately failed to secure a conference championship, a shot at taking it all back during the national title. Now coming to the Seeding and Byes. The top 4 seeds will end up becoming the ranked conference champions and will be given a bye during the first round. This allows them to skip the opening round play and directly advance to the quarterfinals. The remaining 5-12 seeds will have to fight it off during the first-round games. The first-round games will feature matchups between: No. 5 vs. No. 12 No. 6 vs. No. 11 No. 7 vs. No. 10 No. 8 vs. No. 9 The best part about the 5-12 seed games is the home-field advantage. The teams who have the highest seed in the matchups will get a chance to play the game on their home field. This allows for a much more intense experience for college football fans. Now come the quarterfinals and the semifinals. These will be held at the iconic New Year Six Bowl game locations (Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach, Rose, and Sugar Bowls). The teams who win the first-round games will go on to face off against the bye teams. For the 2024-2025 season, the quarterfinals will be hosted by the Fiesta, Peach, Rose, and Sugar Bowls. For the semifinals, the teams who will win the quarterfinals will go on to play at the Cotton or Orange Bowls. Finally, for the much-awaited National Championship Game, the venue will be a neutral site which will be selected through a bidding process. Currently, Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, and Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, have been determined as the upcoming championship locations. The 2 teams who manage to crack the semifinals will face off during this matchup. What day will the college national championship be played?
