David de Gea
David de Gea
Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He kick-started his career at Atletico Madrid, at the youth club. Then, in 2009-10, he was called up to the main team after first choice keeper, Sergio Asenjo went for international duty. It wasn’t long until de Gea was promoted to first choice goalie. Around 2010, his performances started to earn critical acclaim and rumours floated of him being eyed by Manchester United as Edwin van der Sar’s successor. In fact, it was said that Sir Alex Ferguson voluntarily missed a match to travel to Spain and watch de Gea.
After an excellent performance in that year’s Madrid Derby, he was also touted as the successor to Iker Casillas as Spain’s number 1 keeper. Finally in 2011, after much speculation, David de Gea finally decided to hit the Premier League, with Manchester United. Since then, he has been an integral member of the Red Devils.
Out of 389 appearances for Manchester United, David de Gea has made around 800 saves. He also has around 100 clean sheets in his entire Premier League career.
Unfortunately, his International record is not particularly great, having failed to stop many goals. However, he did help the national team to the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2007 and the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2011 and 2013.
