Juan Mata

Spanish player Juan Mata kick-started his football career in the Real Madrid Academy. His first major team was Real Oviedo, where he played for three years. Then, in 2007 he moved to La Liga side Valencia. His big break for Valencia came in the 2008 Copa del Rey when he scored to stun FC Barcelona in the semifinal.

Three years later, he made his move to the Premier League, with Chelsea. According to him, compatriot and Chelsea teammate Fernando Torres helped facilitate the move. Juan Mata made his official Chelsea debut against Norwich City as a substitute and helped them romp to a 3-1 win.

Mata enjoyed a reasonably excellent stint with the Blues until Jose Mourinho arrived. From that point onwards, Mata found himself relegated to the benchwarmer role. This was because Mourinho heavily favoured Brazilian playmaker, Oscar.

In 2014, Jose Mourinho accepted an offer for Juan Mata from Manchester United. Initially, under Louis van Gaal, Mata found himself as a substitute for a few games before breaking into the side permanently. Juan Mata would remain with the Red Devils for a while, even signing a 2-year contract extension in 2019.
