Madison Keys was born on 17 February 1995 in Rock Island, Illinois. Her parents are attorneys and introduced her to tennis as she was intrigued after seeing Venus Williams play tennis at Wimbledon. Later she turned professional in 2009.

Keys believes that her forehand his her biggest strengths and she is widely regarded for her aggressive skills from the baseline. She trains under her coach, Juan Todero.

On-court achievements

Madison Keys won her first WTA title at a Premier-level tournament, Eastbourne International in 2014. Over there she defeated the top ten players Jelena Jankovic and Angelique Kerber.

In 2015, Keys breezed into the Australian Open semi-finals as a teenager and defeated Venus Williams in the quarters and later lost to Serena Williams in the last four round. By the end of the year, she qualified for WTA Elite Trophy. Post that, she suffered from a right shoulder injury.

In 2016, Keys reached two Premier 5 finals in Rome and Montreal. At the Rio Olympics, she played a tough bronze medal match against Petra Kvitova and missed the medal. Madison Keys reached the finals at US Open 2017, and that year, it was an all-American semifinal lineup in the women’s draw.

She lost to her close friend, Sloane Stephens in the US Open finals. They were the first American pair other than the Williams sisters to reach a women’s Grand Slam tournament final. In 2019, she won her first WTA clay-court title at the Charleston Open. Also, she won her first Premier 5 title in Cincinnati. En route to her title Keys dethroned the reigning champion Simona Halep.
