Currently joint top scorer in the Premier League, Tottenham starlet Harry Kane has emerged from nowhere to become one of the best players in the league, also the best young player. Surely the favourite to win the award.

2) Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool)

Another potentially world class youngster, Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho has continued his rapid rise this season and may be another strong contender.

3) Oscar (Chelsea)

Another big-name Brazilian starlet, Oscar has been superb for Chelsea in guiding them to the top of the Premier League table.

4) Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea)

Oscar’s Chelsea team-mate, Thibaut Courtois could also be in contention though goalkeepers don’t tend to win these individual awards.

5) Christian Eriksen (Tottenham Hotspur)

Along with Kane, another top youngster on the books at White Hart Lane is 23-year-old Danish attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen, who has shown flashes of brilliance but perhaps has not been consistent enough this term.

6) Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)

Another Liverpool youngster, Raheem Sterling has been one of the best wingers in the league this season and could be a strong contender for the prize.

7) Hector Bellerin (Arsenal)

Certainly an outsider, but Hector Bellerin will certainly go down as one of the breakthrough performers of this season after his recent rise to the Arsenal first-team.

8) Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton)

One of Southampton’s best players, Nathaniel Clyne is another outsider who has shown some great displays at right-back the entire season.

9) Emre Can (Liverpool)

Probably not quite in the running this term, but the young Emre Can has had a great first season with Liverpool and looks like a real prospect for the Reds.

Another Southampton star, Victor Wanyama has been an unsung hero for the Saints this season but is probably not a big enough name to be considered.
