World No.2, Rafael Nadal defeats Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-0 in just1 hour and 10 minutes to claim his fifth Rogers Cup title at the Montreal Open 2019. With this victory, the 18-time Grand Slam Champion defended his first-ever non-clay court title.
After two rain-hit days in Montreal, the finals between Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev was set to get underway on schedule. The two promised a competitive tennis match and the first game itself saw some long rallies coming into the match.
Daniil Medvedev warned Rafael Nadal about his capabilities in the opening game as he earned a breakpoint but the Spaniard held his serve to deny early lead for the Russian. The two held their serve quite comfortably in the next two games before Nadal broke the 23-year-old in the fourth game of the first set.
Some wonderful hands at the net helped Nadal to earn two break points at 15-40. However, Daniil Medvedev banged down an ace to erase the first breakpoint, but then double faults to give up his serve as Nadal gets a lead of 3-1. It was just the fourth time when the Russian was broken this week.
The two held their serves till the end of the set with the defending champion in full control as he edged ever closer to win his fifth title in Canada, claiming the first set 6-3.
The wind was certainly nasty but Nadal dealt with perfectly with some incredible footwork, accepting it and just and getting on with it. While on the other hand, Daniil Medvedev looked quite uncomfortable with the wind.
In the second set, Rafael Nadal broke thrice to bagel Daniil Medvedev and defend his Canadian Open title quite successfully. Twitter reacts as the world No.2 conquers his record 35th ATP Masters 1000 title, extending his all-time lead over the world No.1, Novak Djokovic.
