Day 2 of the Rio Olympics was again a mixed bag for India. On one hand, India created history when gymnast Dipa Karmakar qualified for the final round of the Individual vault finals and the Indian women’s hockey team marked a positive return to the Olympics after 36 years, with a well-fought draw against higher-ranked Japan, The Women’s Archery Team lost to Russia in Quarter Finals.

Dipa Karmakar’s historic feat has given India something to cheer about from the Rio Olympics after she became the first Indian to qualify for apparatus final of artistic gymnastics. This is the best show by an Indian at the gymnastics event in Olympics. Karmakar qualified for the finals after she averaged 14.850 in two vaults in the subdivision three of the vault event. In the first vault, in which she performed the dangerous Produnova, she scored 15.100 and in the second vault she performed Tsukahara and got a score of 14.866. Dipa secured 7.000 on difficulty and 8.1 on execution, in her first attempt. Her score for difficulty was a tad lower, at 6.000, in the second attempt. She landed low on her Produnova vault in the first attempt, while her second vault was a ‘Tsuk double full twist’ with a step to the side.

The Produnova is an extremely difficult vault to perform and only five female gymnasts have performed it with Karmakar being one of them. Russia’s Oksana Chusovitina, who is in her seventh Olympics, also qualified for the finals and she is also likely to perform her Produnova and give competition to Karmakar. She will be competing in the final on the eve of India’s Independence Day and will try to become India’s first ever medalist in Gymnastics.
