Irish MMA star Conor McGregor is regarded as one of the biggest names in the MMA circle. So, it should not come as a surprise when any matches involving him are instant money-grabbers. Irishman will headline UFC 246 on January 18 against American fighter Donald Cerrone.
In his last UFC match, McGregor faced off and lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in UFC 229 in 2018. On that day, he submitted to the Russian in the fourth round of the main event contest. Understandably, McGregor is out for redemption and Cerrone is the first man on his hit list.
UFC 246 Dwarfs Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov
It is also worth noting that Conor McGregor earned around $3 million when he clashed with Nurmagomedov. Now, Conor McGregor will be returning to the arena at UFC 246 to kick off the first UFC event of the year. It is also believed that he will bag an astonishing $5 million while he searches for redemption at the Octagon against the veteran Cowboy.
Donald Cerrone Bags His Biggest Fight Purse
As it turns out, a fighter of McGregor’s status earns more than double of what his opponent Donald Cerrone, will be paid. The American is set to pocket just $2 million according to The Republic. This huge gulf does not come as a shock, given the Irish fighter’s past records and the money that he brings for the promotion.
In addition to UFC 246, Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone will be eligible for ‘Fight of the Night & Knockout of the Night’ bonuses. Both of those will be worth USD 50,000 each, adding even more value to their bank accounts. The event even got sold out on the very first day of tickets going on sale. So, it is likely that the UFC will aim to book McGregor, their most marketable asset, at least a few more times to boost their sales.
Conor Tops the List for Career Earnings
Every time Conor McGregor steps into the octagon, it’s a spectacle that fans won’t want to miss. Win or lose, Conor is still the biggest attraction in MMA. And his career earnings do nothing but strengthen the above notion. Conor McGregor is on the top of the list when it comes to the career earnings of UFC fighters( PPV points excluded).
Conor has earned more than $12 million in his UFC career. And of course, we are not including one of the biggest money fights in the history of combat sport, May-Mac. Conor’s clash with Eddie Alvarez helped him get a fight purse of $3 million( bonus and PPV points excluded). Similarly for the Diaz rematch, Conor got $3 million(to show) and for the first Diaz fight, Conor got $1 million even when he lost the fight.
There were a lot of speculations that the new deal between ESPN and UFC will decrease the value of star attractions since the PPV buys lost its significance to a certain degree. Well, new business model seems to have no effect on Conor’s fight purse as he bags the biggest fight purse of his MMA career.
