“I Have Made Mistakes”: Conor McGregor Opens up on Quitting Alcohol

From a young fighter in Dublin to the most famous personality in MMA history, the journey of Conor McGregor has been nothing less than a spectacle. He came into the sport with the hopes of millions of Irish fans on his shoulder. Well, he did not disappoint his fans as he achieved things that people had never seen before. 

Conor knocked out one of the greatest featherweights of all time, Jose Aldo to become the featherweight champion, And he would go on to make history by becoming the first-ever two-division champion. However, after his long lay off from the sport when he returned to reclaim his throne at the lightweight division, Conor would suffer defeat in the hands of Khabib Nurmagomedov. 

The fight with Khabib was a personal one for both the fighters. This was one of the most intense rivalries in the history of combat sports.  All the ingredients were there – the way this fight came into the fixtures, the verbal warfare during the press conference, and the post-fight brawl.

Though Khabib Nurmagoemdov won the fight fair and square, proving he is one of the best fighters to ever do it, fans were disappointed with the lack of preparation and seriousness on part of Conor McGregor. However, Conor is fully focused on his octagon return on January 18th against Donald Cerrone.

 

Conor McGregor reflects on the loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov

In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani on ESPN, Conor McGregor talks about the changes he made for this training camp.  Drinking alcohol before the camp for UFC 229, he felt, was one of his biggest mistakes. However, he was careful not to repeat the pattern during the training camp for UFC 246.

“I was drinking and bleeding all fight week the last week (before UFC 229)” stated Conor with remorse.

“I just had the venom in me or something,” said Conor. He also stated that after winning the fights in the gym he would celebrate the win and come back days after.

However, Conor has seemingly learned for his past mistakes as he walks into the octagon on January 18th. He will be focused on and yearning redemption.

“I was not doing what I should have been doing, not living the life that I should have been living. I am not going back there, I am in a great spot. I have made mistakes and I have been man enough to admit them and correct them.” stated Conor.

Well, Conor McGregor has faced adversities before when he lost to Nate Diaz. But he came back stronger and avenged his loss. Hence his fans will be expecting something similar when he squares off against Donald Cerrone.
