The stage is set for arguably the biggest rematch in UFC history after the victorious return of Conor McGregor. Although Khabib will have to get past Tony Ferguson to have the title rematch against Conor fans are already speculating how would the rematch play out.

Can Conor McGregor at his Best Beat Khabib Nurmagomedov?

In the first encounter, Khabib fairly dominated Conor until he got the submission in the 4th round. However, Conor was coming from a long layoff from the sport and he did not look as focused or prepared for the fight. He even admitted the mistakes he made during the training camp for UFC 229 such as drinking too much, partying for days after winning sparring sessions in the gym and so on. But he looked unstoppable against Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. He was focused, prepared for the battle and delivered at a crucial moment. And that will be the narrative around the rematch between Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Conor McGregor. Can Conor Mcgregor at his best beat arguably the greatest lightweight ever, Khabib Nurmagomedov?

The fans are split while deciding the winner for this rematch. However, former UFC lightweight and former teammate of Khabib Nurmagomedov, Josh Thomson is confident in his prediction for Conor vs Khabib 2. According to Thomson, Conor will never ever beat Khabib.

“I like what he(Conor) has done in the sport. But I don’t see him beating Khabib,” said Josh Thomson.

Khabib Nurmagomedov has had a flawless career. He has dominated every opponent since he made his UFC debut. And that is the reason why when he makes a small mistake or faces a little adversities fans tend to believe that they have found the cheek in Khabib’s armor. Such as when Michael Johnson rocked Khabib in the first round, or when Khabib was not able to take Al Iaquinta down in the later rounds or when Khabib went to survival mode against Dustin Poirier after getting rocked. Fans tend to argue that Khabib does not have the striking to deal with the lightweight elites. However, Josh Thomson denies those notions by stating what happened in the fight against Conor. Thomson said:

“Who did the drop in that fight? It was Khabib. Khabib did the drop in because when you make someone fear your takedown that much, your natural reaction is to drop your hands really quick to try and get the under hook.”

Thomson even defended Khabib for having a less dominant performance against Al Iaquinta. Thomson explained:

“Khabib trying to shoot on Al Iaquinta who is 5’7, it’s a different game when shooting on someone who is 5’11. He knew that Khabib was going to try and take him down. During that week Khabibwent through 5 or 6 opponents. So when all of that happens you are not the same fighter you were when you showed up in Vegas thinking you are gonna fight this person. So I cut him a little slack in that fight.”

Josh Thomson predicted that even at his best Conor McGregor will not be able to beat Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, Conor has defied the odds before. Agreed, Khabib is tougher and better than anyone else Conor has ever faced, but undoubtedly Conor will be looking to put up an even tougher fight in the rematch.
