“This Is How the Russian Killed Apollo…”- Fans React to First Fighter to Beat Ronda Rousey Getting Viciously Knocked Out After Poor Officiating

.Sub-par officiating can be extremely hazardous to an athlete in combat sports and former UFC champion Holly Holm learned it the hard way.

The former UFC bantamweight champion is also an established boxer with a reputable record of 33-2-3. In one of her boxing bouts from 2011, she suffered a vicious knockout loss in what many still consider a horrendous stoppage.

In the bout for the IBA and WBAN Welterweight belts, Holm faced France’s Anne-Sophie Mathis, who, just like Holm, had not suffered a loss since 2004.

Holm, who was champion then, lost her titles to Mathis after one of the most vicious knockouts in the history of the sport.

The fight in a nutshell

Holm could not maintain her early success in the later rounds, and she was struggling on her feet. Her opponent connected clean in the seventh and Holm stumbled to the ropes and got entangled between them.

The fight looked over as Holm appeared to be out on her feet, held up only by her arm tangled between the ropes. However, the referee untangled her and waved the fight on. Holm appeared to be briefly back to her senses and got her hands up. However, Mathis put her out cold with the next two shots.

Holm’s legs folded under her, and she almost fell through the ropes. But someone by the ringside caught her head and pushed her back into the ring.

A clip of the incident surfaced on Reddit and fans blasted the referee and Holm’s corner for not better caring for the athlete.

Under the Reddit post, one fan commented, “This is how the Russian killed Apollo #Rocky.” Another took a shot at her corner saying, “Guess her corner man couldn’t find a towel to throw?”

One fan had a go at the referee and wrote, “Ref had money on that for sure.”

Another criticized the referee saying, “She was supposed to go down in the 4th, not the 3rd!!! Ref was trying to keep the fix alive.”

One fan wrote, “He unwrapped her like she was silly string on furniture.”

One angry fan said, “If the ref won’t do it it’s the corners job to protect their fighter unless it’s illegal wherever she was fighting. Dude didn’t even count her or check to see if she was fine. Insane.”

Similarly, another commented, “Terrrrible officiating, even terrible corner monitoring.” One fan wrote, “Hope that was the end of his career. Shocking job.”

Holm went on to win the rematch and reclaim her title. However, this remains one of the scariest endings to a fight in her career and all combat sports.
