The UFC commentator has been open about his own struggles with addiction, revealing how it caused other important things to fall by the wayside.

And on the recent episode of his podcast, the 55-year-old once again touched upon the subject and elaborated on his mental illness. Despite the negative connotations associated with the term ‘mental illness’, Rogan views it as a positive thing to have, something that gives him a unique perspective and makes him stronger.

Joe Rogan reflects on his “good” mental illness

During episode #1971 of JRE, the host welcomed comedian and TV producer Howie Mandel to the show. During their conversation, Rogan opened up about his own mental illness, attributing it to his tendency to get obsessed with things. He said, “When you are someone like me in particular, you have to know what you can get involved in. Because, I get obsessed with things… That’s my mental illness.”

Rogan elaborated further, explaining that his mental illness manifests as extreme obsession. “My mental illness is like extreme obsession. Whether it’s games or anything. I just get obsessed with comedy, I get obsessed with martial arts, I get obsessed with things. So, I have to manage my obsessions with the amount of time that I have. I get obsessed with archery. I get obsessed with things.”

However, Rogan’s perspective on his own mental illness is a valuable one, as he has found a way to channel it into positive outlets.

Further elaborating on that, the 55-year-old said, “It’s a good mental illness to have, because it allows you to excel at things. But you have to be able to manage it. I have to know what I can and can’t get too nuts with.”

Despite his busy schedule and diversified resume, Rogan understands the importance of taking care of his mental and physical well-being.
