Poirier’s last fight was against Dan Hooker in what became an instant classic. In a back-and-forth contest, the Louisiana native came out victorious with a decision win. Now, he will look to stitch together a two-fight win streak and move closer to title contention. Furthermore, he will look to avenge his 2014 loss to McGregor at featherweight.
Poirier has improved immensely since his first fight against McGregor. He also realized UFC gold when he defeated Max Holloway to win the interim lightweight championship at UFC 236. He also got his shot at the undisputed championship against Khabib Nurmagomedov, but fell short at UFC 242.
Dustin Poirier finally gets the fight he wanted
Poirier was supposed to fight Tony Ferguson in October. However, that fight never materialized. Instead, ‘The Diamond’ has his chance to avenge his loss against McGregor. Despite making it clear that he has nothing personal against the Irish fighter and only wants to use the opportunity to further his career, he will look to start the year with a headline-grabbing win.

The UFC made the bout official for UFC 257, which is due to take place on January 23. Nothing has been made official about the venue yet. But, Dana White wants McGregor vs Poirier 2 to be part of an international fight week at Abu Dhabi. He also spoke of having pool parties and fans for the fight.
With the promotion’s biggest star set to return, the UFC is no doubt looking to make the most of it financially. A clash between the two top lightweights in the world is a mouth-watering prospect for fight fans. It would be interesting to see if Poirier can change the course of their rivalry in his favor. He is certainly putting in the hard yards in his bid to even out the scores against the former UFC champion.
