Joe Rogan Fact Checked After Unfounded Smelling Salt Allegations During Yan Xiaonan Vs. Weili Zhang at UFC 300

The co-main event of UFC 300 saw strawweight champion, Zhang Weili take on fellow countrywoman, and no.1 ranked strawweight contender, Yan Xiaonan took “Magnum” to deep waters. Although the back-and-forth ended up becoming one of the best fights in the card, there was a chance that the fight wouldn’t have gone past the first round.

Zhang Weili secured a tight rear naked choke on Yan Xiaonan at the end of the first round which made the title challenger unconscious. However, given that she had survived the round, and was able to get back to her corner, the fight went on to proceed as normal. However, the cut man seemed to have done something that brought Xiaonan to her senses. Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier believed that smelling salts were used to wake “Nine” up. John McCarthy dismissed the allegations during a recent interview.

During a recent podcast episode of the “WEIGHING IN” podcast, former UFC official, Big John McCarthy addressed the whole smelling salt accusation that was plaguing the UFC 300 co-main event. He claimed that despite what Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier believed that night.

During the podcast he stated, “I’m like, no he did not! What Rudy did is you take your finger, you stick it on that area right under the nose and you press hard. And that’s usually what you do with someone that’s been stung by a punch. Okay? It tends to make all those nerve endings know, in the brain starts to focus in on it and they come back.”

Due to the controversy surrounding the Zhang Weili vs Yan Xiaonan fight at the co-main event of the historic UFC 300 event, many people have questioned whether smelling salts are allowed in the promotion. Smelling salts are generally used by athletes to increase breathing and blood flow to the brain. This helps arouse consciousness in case of fainting.

However, given that using smelling salts would bring an unfair advantage to the person using them, it doesn’t seem likely that it would be allowed by the Athletic Commission. Combat Sports regulatory lawyer, Erik Magarken took to Twitter to confirm that smelling salts were indeed not on the list of permitted substances.
