The heavyweight champion would have faced Jon Jones inside the octagon. However, this fight didn’t play out as both the fighters didn’t agree to contractual terms with the promotion. Hence, the UFC president Dana White set up an interim heavyweight title bout between Derrick Lewis and Ciryl Gane.

Gane secured a knockout win over Lewis in the fight to claim the title. Hence, he outright became the viable prospect for the heavyweight gold battle against Ngannou. A fight between Gane and Ngannou would be a logical move now for the promotion. Also, this fight will excite the combat fans and will garner a lot of attention from the MMA universe as both the fighters are former training partners.
