Every time Alvarez gets into the Octagon, he senses a feeling of obligation to represent Spain. “It’s representing the country, and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s about—representing your flag when you step out to fight. Fighting at the highest level is about more than just a personal achievement; it’s about showcasing the talent and determination that Spanish fighters can bring to the world stage.
Joel Alvarez’s Early Life & Background
Joel Alvarez got into MMA nearly by accident. During a holiday in Gijón, he followed his then-partner’s brother to the Tibet Sports Center, where he entered a gym he had never known. Within those four walls, ‘El Fenomeno’ discovered a passion that would shape his life.
From the start, he dedicated himself to mastering the skills required by MMA: boxing, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, and hand-to-hand combat. Standing 189 cm tall and weighing 70 kilos, Alvarez thrived because of his athletic frame and work ethic. Before turning professional, he won over two dozen amateur matches in seven years, gaining the nickname that, when translated, reads, ‘The Phenomenon.’
As he made the transition to professional competition, Alvarez balanced occasional work, such working as a doorman on Saturday evenings, while training everyday. Coached by Omar, Marcos, Borja, Pepín, and Pablo ‘Chino,’ he developed the precision, resilience, and adaptability that now define his career.
