Kickboxing and MMA legend Alistair Overeem has been making the rounds of media outlets after it was rumored that the Dutchman was interested in signing with ONE Championship. The motivation behind this news was the recent announcement of the ONE Openweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix. With a grand prize of a million dollars, it was not unusual that a kickboxer of Overeem’s caliber would be interested in it. To make things interesting, he was even spotted cage-side at ONE Fight Night 6.

As it turns out, these were all baseless rumors and Overeem had to take in on himself to shut them down. He did so with an Instagram post where he explained his love for the sport while expressing his loyalty to Glory Kickboxing.

Overeem penned out his post, mentioning an invitation from ONE FC as he vacationed in Bangkok.

“Just to set the record straight… I’m on a holiday in Thailand and was invited to a One FC event in Bangkok. As a fan of the sport, I always enjoy watching some good fights. Just as a visitor. Nothing more, nothing less. So… for all the people who love to spread rumors; sorry guys 🙂 no gossip here. I’m dedicated to Glory kickboxing.”

The Dutch fighter had previously re-signed with Glory in 2021 after leaving the UFC. Moreover, he then went on to beat Badr Hari via decision on 2022 October. With his latest statement, it’s clear that Overeem will continue to ply his trade with Glory.

ONE Championship to organize Muay Thai Grand Prix worth US$1,000,000.

CEO Chatri Sityodtong recently announced yet another ambitious tournament for its Muay Thai fighters. With a prize of a million dollars, the Muay Thai Grand Prix was meant to be an open-weight event. While a total of 16 fighters would be competing for the cash prize, Sityodtong also asked fans if they wanted to see the likes of Rodtang in the event.

However, a date has not been set. This announcement clearly is a huge step up for Muay Thai fighters.

Considering Overeem’s presence in the ONE FC event, the rumors of him joining the promotion were quite natural. But Overeem’s statement has clearly shut down any speculations; while also pledging his allegiance to Glory Kickboxing. Although fans would surely agree that it would have been fascinating to see him compete against some of the best Muay Thai fighters in the world.
