In 2015, Rousey won the ESPY female athlete of the year award, defeating the likes of Serena Williams and Lindsey Vonn.

Following that, Rousey and Williams met later that year and before the 2016 Australian Open, the legendary tennis player shared her thoughts on their meeting , “I definitely reached out to her.”

“I mean, whenever, you see someone in sport that’s doing really well, I love to see people do well, but you know, I don’t think – the similarities I think were really different. She was going for something totally different than I was. I wouldn’t necessarily say it was the same path.”

While Williams talked about her and Rousey not sharing a similar path, after the 2015 ESPY awards, they did seem to share a similar fate. While Rousey failed to defend her title, for the 7th time and lost against Holly Holm at the UFC 193 event, three-time defending champion Williams also lost in the semi-finals of the 2015 US Open.

Serena Williams showed her support to Ronda Rousey

Rousey was the most dominant champion in the UFC at that time, and to lose a fight in such a manner really hit the former bantamweight champion. However, while ‘Rowdy’ was down and out, there was one person who knew how she felt and offered her support to the former UFC champion.

Williams sent a text to Rousey after Thanksgiving 2015 and showed her love and support. Most importantly, she understood what Rousey was going through, having herself been on the losing end at the US Open 2015.

“Everybody else is like, ‘Oh, I’m small and proper and tennis-y and she’s just like, fuc*in muscles, curvaceousness, awesomeness. She doesn’t back down from anyone.”

While competition in the sports world is a very common thing to see, it is incredible to see such legendary athletes respect and support each other in such a way.
