It seems like lawsuit woes are slowly subsiding from the tails of Dana White and Co. Why? Well, it all connects back to Mark Hunt, the hard-hitting former UFC fighter known for his striking prowess, who found himself embroiled in a legal battle with the UFC, and Brock Lesnar following their showdown at UFC 200.

The UFC 200 clash between Lesnar and Hunt originally concluded with Lesnar securing a unanimous decision victory over Hunt. But things took an unexpected turn when Lesnar tested positive for clomifene, a banned performance-enhancing drug. This revelation led to a series of lawsuits and accusations that shook the UFC multiverse. However, it seems like the UFC is finally out of the clouds – at least for now.

At UFC 200, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ came back to the UFC after over five years of absence from the promotion. Why? To go to war with Mark Hunt – a rising heavyweight star in Dana White’s growingly famous promotion. But it didn’t go quite well for the WWE star.

Lesnar almost boastfully showcased his wrestling prowess by securing a unanimous decision victory over Mark Hunt. However, this apparent triumph was later marred by Lesnar’s failed drug tests. As it turns out, in a pre-fight drug test taken days before the fight, USADA flagged the WWE star for an anti-doping violation.

Around a month later, Dana White and Co. disclosed that Lesnar had, yet again, tested positive for clomiphene and hydroxy-clomiphene, resulting in a one-year suspension and a $250,000 fine, equivalent to 10% of his disclosed purse.

Why did Mark Hunt sue UFC and Brock Lesnar?

But it seems like the taste of defeat left Mark Hunt bitter, leading him to file a lawsuit against the UFC. He accused the promotion of having prior knowledge of Lesnar’s PED use. Hunt’s lawsuit was a complex web of allegations, including breach of contract, battery, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, fraud, and unjust enrichment.

In 2019, most of Hunt’s claims were dismissed by the United States District Court for Nevada. Only the breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing claim remained. However, this claim, too, was later rejected. It wasn’t until September 24, 2021, that the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reopened the case.

The result of the Mark Hunt-UFC-Brock Lesnar lawsuit

Despite the legal twists and turns, Mark Hunt’s legal battle with the UFC, Dana White, and Brock Lesnar appears to have come to a definitive conclusion. How? Well, recently, U.S. District Judge Jennifer A. Dorsey ruled against Hunt, stating that he failed to prove that the UFC and Dana White knowingly allowed him to fight Lesnar, fully aware of Lesnar’s PED use before UFC 200.

As a result, Hunt’s remaining claims were dismissed, bringing an end to a legal saga that began in 2017, paused in 2019, and was revived in 2021 by an appeals court. The case aimed to prove fraud, battery, aiding-and-abetting battery, and civil conspiracy claims. However, Dorsey granted summary judgment on all counts, effectively closing the case. So, it’s a wrap on at least one of the many lawsuits that have been miring the reputed MMA promotion for a long time.

What’s more – it seems like the UFC head honcho is pretty relieved at the way the lawsuit’s hearing has turned out to be. Taking to Tuesday’s press conference after the Contender Series event, he made a jibe at Hunt. He amusingly declared, “Listen, Mark Hunt has lost so many lawsuits against us – it’s insane! He’s a bit of a delusional guy. He’s gonna have to pay some legal fees.”

White’s statement reflects the UFC’s perspective on the legal battles with Mark Hunt. White also hinted at Hunt’s persistence in pursuing legal action against the organization, which he referred to as “insane.” Additionally, he characterized Hunt as “a bit of a delusional guy,” suggesting that the fighter’s actions might not align with reality.
