UFC megastar Sean O’Malley is going to face champ Aljamain Sterling this weekend at UFC 292, and fans cannot wait to see who wins the clash. Although ‘Funk Master’ has a better resume in the MMA world, O’Malley is substantially ahead of him in popularity.

“He is the biggest star (talking about Sean O’Malley). He is the guy that the general public would seem to be drawn to but most times, you need a guy to uplift you,” he said. According to Cormier, this is a scenario that he himself experienced during his career.

Drawing from his own encounters with Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic, Cormier highlighted how the luminosity of these renowned opponents cast a spotlight on him. Moreover, it raised his own stature in the process.

“When I went into the fights with Jon Jones Jon Jones’s profile was so big that he elevated me. Then when I fought Stipe, it did the same thing right,” he said. This phenomenon extended to the concept of “the rub,” a principle Cormier borrowed from the world of professional wrestling. “It’s the rub, if you pin Hulk Hogan or you pin Roman Reigns, you’re the man now,” he added.

Further, Cormier aptly assessed Aljamain Sterling’s past opponents, highlighting the crucial missing element in his journey. Despite the champ’s numerous title defenses against formidable opponents like TJ Dillashaw, Henry Cejudo, and Petr Yan, DC noted that these opponents lacked name recognition and star power.

As many title defenses as he’s had, he has not had that name. Because for as good as TJ Dillashaw, Henry Cejudo, Petr Yan were, people were not really tuning in to watch them,” the former UFC champ said. “They do tune in the watch Sean O’Malley,” he added.
