Khamzat Chimaev is one of the biggest breakout stars in the UFC this year. The Russian is only two fights into his UFC career and is well known already. This is not very common in the sport.

However, it’s understandable why Khamzat has been garnering a lot of attention. Khamzat made his debut in the UFC in July of this year against John Phillips at Fight Island. The Sweden-based fighter stopped Phillips in the second round of their fight.

Following his win over Phillips, Chimaev requested Dana White if he could be booked for another fight on fight island and Dana obliged. Khamzat had a quick turnaround and fought again on July 25, just 10 days after his UFC debut. In the process, he broke the record for the quickest turnaround win in the UFC.

Going into his fight against Gerald Meerschaert, all eyes will be on Khamzat. “Borz” is booked for two fights in a row. He will face Meerschaert on Saturday. And as per his request, the UFC plans on giving him another fight against Maia in November.

His opponent, Gerald Meerschaert, has maintained that once he is done with Chimaev, he will not leave the cage physically fit to fight in October. This promises to be an exciting fight with a lot on the line for both fighters.

Khamzat Chimaev on newfound fame

In a recent interview, Chimaev was asked what he was up to following his win over Rhys McKee.

It’s like before, training. Hard work, hard work. Like, I just take 2-3 weeks to relax. I’ve been in Barcelona, in Spain. Never been there before. Many people know me now.

“They come to me to take a picture, it’s nice. But now it’s the same for me I live close to the gym, I live in the gym. Train every day, do my work,” Khamzat said.

Chimaev then gave his thoughts about his upcoming opponent.

“I look his last fight, he lost his last fight via KO. I don’t know so much about this guy, but I know he is a black belt in BJJ. I have respect if he is ‘real’ black belt.

“We will see in the cage if he is a real black belt. I don’t think he is a real black belt because [Jack] Hermansson choked him out but Hermansson not a black belt. I have a blue belt in BJJ. I don’t know who gift him his black belt.”
