This ICC Cricket World Cup has caught much of the media attention for all the wrong reasons. As it turns out, the umpires, Marais Erasmus and Kumar Dharmasena have been making very strange decisions in the World Cup 2019 final. For New Zealand in particular, Martin Guptill was not out by Erasmus, Henry Nicholls was dismissed by Dharmasena, which was reviewed and reversed.

Meanwhile, Guptill was another victim of Dharmasena, and that review was lost. Skipper Kane Williamson was declared not out by Dharmasena, which was reversed and finally, Ross Taylor was given out by Erasmus and he was actually not out.

According to many, the umpiring throughout the tournament has been extremely poor. Dharmasena has copped majority of the flak, and one has to wonder if he was the right choice. In fact, Aleem Dar was expected to be the umpire in the final, but it went to Dharmasena instead.

The umpiring has been so shambolic, that Dharmasena even took a hat-trick of poor decisions in the World Cup 2019 Final. In fact, the likes of India also lost out due to poor umpiring decisions. In all honesty though, umpiring is not as easy as people think. Umpiring for the final, will bring about unnecessary pressure and a wrong decision can be costly.
