US Open 2019 Day 1 Upsets – Angelique Kerber, Fabio Fognini and Many Others Pack Their Bags

The opening day of US Open 2019 had Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams in action. All of them earn their tickets to the next round at the New York major, but sadly a few seeds end their American Slam reverie on the day one of the US major.

Angelique Kerber

Her poor run on the WTA track continues since the time Angelique Kerber split with her coach. The former US Open champion is presently playing without a coach and at Flushing, the 14th seed, Kerber lost to Kristina Mladenovic 5-7, 6-0, 4-6.

Jack Sock

The American returned to the circuit after his injury hiatus at this year’s Atlantan Open, and at US Open 2019, Jack Sock lost to Pablo Cuevas in straight sets.

Monica Puig

She was devastated after her opening-round loss as her coach (ex-coach now) parted ways with her before US Open 2019 got underway. “I wanted to prove to myself that nobody is going to be able to treat me this way in anything,” she said after her defeat in reference to her ex-coach Kamau Murray. Puig 3-6, 3-6 to Rebecca Peterson.

Hubert Hurkacz

On Sunday, the Polish player, Hurkacz won his first-ever ATP title at Winston-Salem Open 2019 after defeating Benoit Paire in the finals, but the very next day, it turned out to be a nightmare for Hubert Hurkacz as he lost a toilsome five-set match to Jeremy Chardy in the opening round of the US Open 2019.
