Simone Biles is not just an athlete who won gold medals at the Olympics. The fact that she is the most decorated American gymnast ever is also half the story. Perhaps what makes Simone great is not just her accolades and popularity, but the positive changes she has brought about in a million lives.

Today, the world sees Simone Biles as an inspiration, an epitome of mental health. It’s because of her that people now believe it’s alright to make oneself the topmost priority over everything else. It was because of her all these qualities that the gymnast has been chosen as the Godmother of the Celebrity Beyond cruise ship.

How Simone Biles saved an athlete’s life

During Tokyo Olympics, the 2019 world championships gold medalist sprinter Jasmine Blocker was struggling with mental health issues. Additionally, the isolation phase during the covid-19 pandemic made things worse for her. She also remembers battling through panic attacks and depression that made her feel vulnerable.

However, when Simone withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics event stating her mental health issues, it inspired Jasmine to the core. The athlete said she realized, “It’s justified to [say], ‘It’s not safe for me to do it because my head’s not right.’ It’s justified to [say], ‘I have to take care of myself first so that I can be there for others.”

Perhaps Simone gave her the validation she was seeking for a long time and she finally choose to get the treatment.

Jasmine enrolled herself in a PHP program

After watching Simone Biles, the 29-year-old athlete from Princeton enrolled herself in the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). Even though the program got her far away from the track, she knew the decision she made was absolutely right. Now that she has made substantial progress, she thinks the credit goes to Simone Biles.

Perhaps that is what sums up greatness. Changing someone’s life without even knowing you did that. Maybe someday some other gymnast might overlap Simone Biles’ records. However, she will always be remembered as a role model and the epitome of mental health for generations to follow.
