Arguably the most notable gymnast competing in Santiago in the 2023 Pan American Games was Rebeca Andrade. At the Tokyo Olympics, she cemented her charm by taking second place all-around and gold on the vault. Earlier this month, Andrade edged Simone Biles to win a gold medal on the vault at the Worlds. At the Pan American Games which took place 21-25 October, the 24-year-old gymnast posed a threat to the US Gymnastics team throughout America’s biggest multi-sports event.

However, when Andrade sprinted to execute her favorite routine, her turn earned a score lower than perfect. As her performance clip spread on the internet it sparked discussion among fans until an international Olympian highlighted some possible cuts.

The gymnastics margin miss for Rebeca Andrade is explained

Rebeca Andrade won the much-anticipated gold in her favorite vault exercise at the Pan American Games. Regarded as the best; her performance seemed effortless as she earned an impeccable 15.333 on her first vault, a nearly faultless Cheng that is one of the hardest gymnastics routines. Her maneuver was shared on Twitter(X) by @deltchevpiked which was recently reposted by 3X Olympian Kyle Shewfelt who wrote, “Thanks to everyone who helped point out the ?deductions? on this vault and why it didn?t score a perfect 10 for execution.”

In the video, Rebecca performed a 180-degree spin on the ground before jumping into the air in a gymnastics maneuver with a half-turn. Before landing, they do a one-and-a-half twist, or 540 degrees, extended somersault forward. However, there was a slight deduction with a forward-leaning chest on the landing. 9.733 and 5.6 points added to her 15.333.

Noting the deduction, the Canadian gymnast Shewfelt added, “I think the scoring of this vault represents two deeply rooted issues in gymnastics that need to be addressed.” He added; “Issue 1: There is an impossible expectation of perfection.”

Further, he stated, “Issue 2: Marketing. There have been a few missed “10” opportunities in gymnastics.” The outstanding performances of Mikayla Maroney and Simone on Vault and Zhou Jingyuan on Parallel bars are a few that also come to mind. Comprehending the scoring system enhances the interest and involvement of viewers. Although the debate was settled for Rebecca, Shewfelt went on to address the depth of the issue.

Canadian Olympic gymnast calls out sports’ system

Kyle Shewfelt continued to explain his deep analysis of the gymnastics deduction during meets. He brought up how there is little doubt that the general public’s ignorance of the scoring system lowers their level of participation. Viewers’ attention would probably grow if they saw a flawless score, such as 10.0 for execution. The casual viewers, however, only tune in once every four years because of this lack of awareness.

He further concluded by sharing how it’s alarming that, in the past 17 years, no gymnast at a significant international competition has received a flawless execution score. “Do you see the problem here?” Shewfelt said. As the world is anticipating another Biles and Andrade rivalry in next year’s Summer Olympics; could any one of them score a perfect 10 debunking Shewfelt’s theory?
