Despite this tough setback, he took a moment to connect with a fan in a deeply touching way on social media, showcasing not just his talent on a board but also his compassion as a human being.

The 11X world champion competed in the 2024 Bells Beach tour against Barron Mamiya. In a low-scoring round-of-32 victory, Kelly Slater fell short against Mamiya, who capitalized on the best two waves for an 11.37-10.10 victory at Winkipop on Saturday morning. This video was posted by Rip Curl on social media reposting it, the surfing legend expressed his gratitude towards his fans who supported him a lot through a story on Instagram, where he said, “Not my year/day at Bells and maybe the last time competing here. Thanks to everyone who came out and hung around after the heat for a few hours. The crowds have been amazing and so supportive. Enjoy the week and thanks for the memories!”.

Mamiya confessed to feeling nervous before facing the legendary Kelly Slater in their recent clash and said, “I’ve never really beaten Kelly in a man-on-man heat so it was nice to finally get him on one before he finally retires, or whatever he does”. The surfing legend Kelly Slater won the first heat of the 2024 tour, but the 52-year-old revealed about his retirement.

Kelly Slater, the 11-time world champion, is eager for the upcoming World Surf League event at Margaret River in mid-April. However, he clarifies that only a victory there could potentially alter his decision about retiring from professional surfing, “I haven’t made an announcement, but I’m going to wrap this thing (career) up pretty soon”. “I’m just trying to enjoy each one that I’m at now”, he shared. This year has been rough for the legend, as he had hoped for an Olympics swansong, but couldn’t make it to the national team. 

The uncertainties surrounding the surfing legend’s future  

Slater’s record-breaking 11 world titles are a testament to his longevity in competitive surfing. He made history by becoming the youngest-ever world champion at age 20 in 1992. Kelly then went on to claim his last world title at the age of 39 in 2011. Slater’s mastery at the prestigious Pipeline Masters event is legendary. Besides so many records, the surfing legend remains uncertain about his retirement, as he shared about earning his way back on tour the next year.
