Penn Relays’ rich history has often profited the athletic sphere at the national and World Athletics forums. The prestigious Hall of Fame list of Penn Relays has showcased some of the finest in the relay sprinting category. Erin Donohue and Angel Patterson have remained some of the prominent faces who started their journey from Penn Relays to find themselves in a bigger arena, like the Olympics later. However, the relay competition had some constraints previously. 

One of those constraints was the limited participation space consisting only of college programs and high school talents from the USA and the Caribbean Islands. But from next year, the relay race will face a major change. 

World Athletics and Penn Relays will host Global Relays 2024

As added by Rori Dunk in his X-post, the Penn Relays will host the Global Relays 2024, partnering with World Athletics. Breaking the news, Rori Dunk wrote, “Announcement.@pennrelays Partner with @WorldAthletics to Bring Global Relays in 2024”. This major development came after World Athletics acknowledged the due credit of the Penn Relays in elevating the relay competition on a larger map. 

However, the detailed news came later. As the Penn Relays added, the 128th relay occasion of the Penn Relays will host sprinting talents from at least 12 countries in the form of Global Relays. Echoing the occurrence, Steve Dolan, the chief of Penn Relays, emphatically claimed, “The Penn Relays is proud to welcome athletes from around the globe to Philadelphia,”. Moreover, the authority announced the timeline and events of the occasion as well. Interestingly, the timing might be a boost for the Paris Olympics.

The trials for the 2024 Paris Olympics 

Global Relays will happen between April 25-27 in 2024. That will be just one week early from the World Athletics Relays Bahamas 24. The Olympic committee already touted that event as the official trials for the Paris Olympics 2024 for the relay sprinters. So on that note, around 1600 sprinters will participate in that event.

For the relay sprinters entering both events, Global Relays might come out as a ‘trial event’ before entering the actual Olympic trials. However, in Global Relays, the number of events is much less. For both men and women, 4×100 and 4×400 are the projected events. Therefore, before the Paris Olympics 2024, these two relay championships might propel a better chance to taste the track and field prowess from different levels.
