Often regarded as a method actor in Hollywood, Jared Leto has gone to extreme measures to prepare for his roles in movies like Suicide Squad, Dallas Buyers Club, Blade Runner 2049, etc. But his biggest challenge, one that threatened his life, was not while preparing for a movie, but instead on the Red Rocks of Vegas with climbing legend Alex Honnold by his side.

On March 6, 2020, Jared Leto posted a rather elongated note on his Instagram stating about his then-recent scary ordeal. He was rock climbing with the legendary Alex Honnold, but even that wasn’t a guaranteed safety net in wild.

Jared Leto wrote in his Instagram post, “Not to sound dramatic, but this is the day I nearly died. Took a pretty good fall climbing with @alexhonnold at Red Rock”. He wasn’t being dramatic at all, since his fall could’ve been deadly, if not for the turn of fortunes. He further wrote, “Looked up and within seconds the rope was being cut by the rock while I dangled some 600 ft in the air”. Leto’s fear must’ve been palpable.

Jared Leto loves climbing mountains as a form of his exercise routine. He most often charts Yosemite National Park, which he believes has the best climbing spot in the world. But he also frequently climbs the Red Rock in Nevada, whenever he wants to be closer home. On this occasion, it was the latter that got him in heaps of trouble.

He continued his post with an ethereal touch about his feelings at that moment, saying, “I remember looking down at the ground below. It was a strange moment – less fear, more matter-of-fact, and slightly melancholy. The adrenaline came after when I got back on the wall. But we made it through and lived to see another day”.

He ended the post with, “Overall it was actually quite fun. we continued climbing into the night…swipe thru for video”, and posted a video of him cursing in the excitement of that escape. Leto’s love for climbing remains intact and positively enough the incident didn’t put any dent in it.

Leto shared two images and a video on his Instagram that went along with his post. The first picture shows a grim-looking Jared Leto, someone who looked like he had literally seen death on his face. The second image showed the rope at the exact point where the rock started cutting it through, with its inner white cloth peeking out. In the clip we see him cursing repeatedly in excitement. He said, “Hole f***ing sh*t!! Holy f**k! It was fraying right at the point”, with the camera pointing towards the cliff edge that cut the rope. Heavy gasps of breath could be heard intermittently between his words, showing his rush of adrenaline.

Jared Leto also does Vipassana Meditation as part of his wellness being. But Rock climbing is his favorite form of outdoor activity and is lucky enough to find a great spot near his hometown i.e. Red Rocks.
