Michael Phelps is the definition of success in the swimming world. As an American flagbearer, the Baltimore Bullet has adorned many Olympic and World Championship medals around his neck. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, he finished with five gold medals and one silver to leave behind a solid legacy. While the crowds cheered for the golden and silver orbs on his chest, they were perplexed by the purple marks all over his body.
Many speculated injuries in the pool, but Michael Phelps wasn’t the only one with those marks. In fact, many athletes had similar bruises on their bodies that no one could explain. Later, Phelps revealed that he had used the ancient cupping therapy to relieve muscle soreness before his final Olympic races. Interestingly, after retiring from competitive swimming, the legendary athlete is touting his cupping device as a game-changer in athletics.

Michael Phelps has created a company named ‘Flying Fish Cupping’ to sell his new line of merch in the health and fitness industry. His topmost product is the MP Roller Cupping. As Phelps looks at this device, it should be part of every athlete’s training and wellness routine. He has earned the vote of confidence from UCLA’s exercise scientist Nick Tiller, Ph.D.
The wait is over. For just $450.00, you can finally buy Michael Phelps’ cupping device, which claims without evidence to “improve athletic performance” and “remove metabolic waste and toxins.”

Tiller wrote an X post saying, “The wait is over. For just $450.00, you can finally buy Michael Phelps’ cupping device, which claims without evidence to ‘improve athletic performance’ and ‘remove metabolic waste and toxins’. No longer bearing the marks of #pseudoscience, Pheps is now championing the cause.” On Phelps’ website, the product description has some bold claims suggesting this device can do wonders for the body.

While everything seemed well and good, the fans could not justify the $450 price. Michael Phelps’ company has proactively created a payment plan where buyers can buy the cupping device for as low as $40.62 every month. But the scientific claims on the Twitter post have stood out like a sore thumb for the fans who flooded the comment section with angry replies.
Fans voice concerns over cupping device pricing and scientific claims
Each of the comments on X’s post exposed the frustration of the fans at the unscientific claims and the exorbitant pricing. They were thoroughly disappointed with Michael Phelps and vented their anger at him and Nick Tiller through fiery responses. Along those lines, one fan challenged Tiller’s claim of the device’s efficacy, asking,
how much do you earn for this nonsens ?

Next, one fan wrote a hilarious comment addressing Tiller, inquiring,
I take it from your post that I shouldn’t be expecting the MP Roller Cupping under the Christmas tree this year, @NBTiller?

The commenter pointed out that Tiller cannot be trusted, saying,
Kinda matches with his comment at ACSM a few years ago when he said “it’s not rocket science” when referring to swim training … 🤦♂️

The next fan was unhappy with the price and sought more merch, replying,
for that price it should come with a signed photo of Michael Phelps… or maybe a used pair of his goggles?

Lastly, one fan praised the cupping device while debunking Nick Tiller’s theory of it being Phelps’ source of success, writing,
I love that a device which literally stretches out the skin actually is good for eliminating stretch marks.
I imagine Phelps could have never succeeded without cupping. Or wait, he did rack up over a DOZEN gold medals before he started cupping in 2014.🤪https://t.co/4grTHEOvmS

All things aside, the cupping device has worked for Michael Phelps and helped him remove muscle tension. He wanted to give the athletic world a similar feel of relaxation, but things went south. However, the Swimming GOAT is still as resilient as ever and continues to back its product on the website.
