In the summer, Egyptian beaches see an influx of visitors from all over the world. This also applied to Vladimir Popov. He and his father, Yury, had been residing in Hurghada for a while. While snorkeling off the shore of the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Hurghada, Popov was attacked by a tiger shark, whose photographs and videos have since gone viral on the internet. One eyewitness to this tragedy later detailed what they saw, stating, “It’s eating his remains now.”
Because of this tragedy, Egyptian officials have decided to block 46 miles of shoreline around Hurghada. Watersports on the beaches will also be suspended until Sunday as officials examine the reason for the incident. The shark was reportedly taken from the ocean in a boat and battered to death after it was brought ashore. The authorities later confiscated it for further examination, claiming that this particular sort of attack was exceedingly unusual.

Popov was not the only one to go through this unfortunate incident. Shark attacks have been an ongoing issue for years, and several people have faced death. A decade ago, other tourists have been attacked by sharks in Egyptian waters.

Several people have been attacked by sharks in Egyptian waters in the past decade. In 2010, a German tourist and four other foreigners were murdered and injured in a series of five attacks in five days that occurred abnormally near the coast of Sharm el-Sheikh. Both 2015 and 2018 saw atrocities on the Red Sea beach caused by shark attacks, with the same type of attack occurring in both years.
After the deaths of a 68-year-old Austrian and a Romanian lady in July 2022, the beaches in the area of the Sahl Hasheesh resort and Makadi Bay, 16 miles south of Hurghada, were closed for several days. A mako shark was suspected in both deaths, though details remained unclear in the accounts.
