When an athlete reaches the status of a global superstar, they develop a greater sense of understanding and responsibility. Cycling maestro and current Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas vowed to double the efforts of his organization and make a difference in the lives of many more children.

Setting a goal of providing 5000 cycles for children in a bunch of cities, including London, Caerphilly, Cardiff, and Swansea. They set up the Geraint Thomas Charitable Trust in 2018 after the Welsh resident athlete won his first title in the Tour de France.

The main goal of Geraint was to deliver cycles to disabled children and also help young children propel quicker towards achieving their dreams on a cycle. The idea was to cater to children in deprived areas, giving them an equal, if not better, opportunity to fulfill their dreams and not feel left behind.

Speaking to the media at the latest fundraiser event for his trust, Geraint explained the reason and goal of this ambitious campaign.

“I was always so lucky that I had a bike and also that I had a track just around the corner from my house. But not everyone is that fortunate. That’s why I’m really pleased that we’re able to give a helping hand to these brilliant projects which get children and young people on bikes.”

“We have deliberately targeted projects for children and young people who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to enjoy cycling.”

“We know that there are huge benefits for those who cycle, but we also know there are still barriers. Not everyone can afford a bike or has the skills to repair one.”

“Not everyone has somewhere to store a bike or know how to ride safely. And there are those who require adaptive bikes which tend to be more expensive. We are thrilled to be supporting these projects which tackle inequalities,” said Adrian Coles, the chairman.

This kind of standard and action sets the good from the great. The accolades they achieve do not define the legacy of an athlete, but the mark they leave on the world. Geraint Thomas and his mark will be in the hearts and minds of the countless children he will help. His legacy will live on through their achievements and growth in life.
