The Professional Hockey Women’s League is off to a rocking beginning. No one anticipated the league to garner such a massive following, but then again, who doesn’t love surprises? Just a week after its much-celebrated and followed launch, the game scheduled between Minnesota and Montreal had a record-breaking attendance of over 13,000 people.

It was the single largest number of people gathered in a stadium to watch a professional women’s hockey game. The cheers of Minnesota fans engulfed the stadium as they went on to register a brilliant victory.

The Xcel Energy Centre was nothing short of a festival on Saturday. The energy was infectious, and it felt like a carnival, with attendance recording bettering the numbers of last week’s game in Ottawa, 8318. These are encouraging signs for the newly launched Professional Women’s Hockey League.

Just last week, on January 1, legendary tennis player and advocate for women in sports, Billie Jean King, dropped the puck that signaled the start of this ambitious tournament.

The record attendance number for Saturday’s game, where Minnesota sailed to a comfortable  3-0 victory, was just the kind of response many didn’t expect. For a women’s sports league to crack such numbers at the start shows just how massive the opportunity is. When you have a league backed by the iconic figure Billie Jean King and Mark Walter, co-owner of the LA Dodgers, things often work out!

From just selling tickets for the lower bowl in the arena to selling tickets for the upper and club levels, the night sprung many pleasant surprises for the PWHL organizers. With Billie at the helm, the problem of player security and wage conundrum goes into the bin, establishing a sense of great credibility for the league.

With carefully crafted marketing moves and well laid-out plan for the future, the PWHL owners are making sure to leave no stone unturned to make the league a massive success. They have hopes of doing what the WNBA did for their women athletes.
